BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

For the week of Feb. 25th, 2004

If you want to throw a bash during the Lenten season then you will need Party Foods for Vegetarians by Celia Brooks Brown. This hardcover cookbook with 159 pages has 80 recipes and over 200 photographs. Some cookbooks cover the lack of good food with photos but this one doesn’t. Included are menu plans, planning advice, tips on timing and some great recipes. Canapes, cocktail bites and appetizers are followed small courses and then hearty main dishes.
Vegetarian or Lenten food doesn’t need to be boring. It should be complex and hearty. It should be filled with flavor and leave you wanting more. The recipes included in Field of Greens: New Vegetarian Recipes From The Celebrated Greens Restaurant by Anne Somerville will become a favorite for any time of the year. There are 300 recipes included in this 464 page hardback cookbook. Among them are included these delicious recipes: Corn and Bulgur Salad with Cilantro and Lime, Winter Greens with Pears, Walnuts and Warm Roquefort Croutons, Spinach Cakes with Shiitake Mushrooms and Goat Cheese, and Mushroom Risotto with Leeks and Fennel.
